Responding to the August 14th Earthquake

On August 14th at 8:29 AM, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck southern Haiti. Friends, staff, and patients are safe. We are grateful that Saint Antoine’s Hospital and the Grand Anse Health and Development (GAHDA) Breast Clinic in Jeremie did not sustain any significant damage. However, the surrounding area has been devastated: the streets are full of rubble from fallen buildings, and people are desperately trying to dig loved ones out from under the debris.

Bette Gebrian, our partner in Haiti, is leading the GAHDA team in coordinating care for injured patients across Jeremie and surrounding areas and providing emergency care for survivors. The greatest need right now is food and shelter for survivors who have been forced out of their homes and living on the streets, as well as for medical/surgical supplies for those who have been injured. GAHDA is on the ground purchasing and distributing food, tarps, tents, and additional medical supplies.

GASP was able to donate the medical and surgical supplies we had stored in the GAHDA Breast Clinic. James Luc, a member of the GASP surgical team living in Haiti, is coordinating the distribution of supplies and working with local surgeons to care for the injuries of the earthquake survivors.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who has contacted us and shown their support. If you are interested in contributing to earthquake relief efforts, you can make a donation directly to GAHDA by clicking here.

Your gift will help GAHDA, our partner in Jeremie, support the local community in caring for earthquake survivors.
