GERRYMANDERING: OUR DEMOCRACY AT RISK

  • ClassACT HR73 is pleased to present its primer on gerrymandering: "Gerrymandering: Our Democracy at Risk.” Written by James P. Harbison and J. Ryan O’Connell with editing by Sallie Gouverneur, the primer outlines the gerrymandering practices of each state, and includes a compilation of local resources and an Action Plan for classmates who would like to address gerrymandering issues in their state.

JUSTICEAID AND SMYAL (SUPPORTING AND MENTORING YOUTH ADVOCATES AND LEADERS)

  • The Justice & Civic Engagement Initiative supported and created programs to promote awareness for JusticeAid’s 2022 beneficiary, SMYAL (Supporting and Mentoring Youth Advocates and Leaders)
  • Led by Therese Steiner and Steve Milliken.

Every year JusticeAid, founded by classmate Steve Milliken, identifies a pressing civil rights issue to spotlight, and carefully selects a nonprofit addressing that issue as its grantee partner.  This year JusticeAid will be working with SMYAL (Supporting and Mentoring Youth Advocates and Leaders). SMYAL supports and empowers lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth in the Washington, DC, metropolitan region. Through youth leadership, SMYAL creates opportunities for LGBTQ youth to build self-confidence, develop critical life skills, and engage their peers and community through service and advocacy. Committed to social change, SMYAL builds, sustains, and advocates for programs, policies, and services that LGBTQ youth need as they grow into adulthood.
