WHY SHOULD I GET INVOLVED?

ClassACT is an innovative opportunity to make a difference, to help create positive change, and to build relationships with Classmates. ClassACT is unique, and there is currently no similar initiative in the Harvard Alumni community. 

There is evidence galore that doing well by others makes the doer feel good --- that's one thing. You'll also find that working with people you have known since college --- or didn't know then but welcome getting to know now --- can be really enjoyable.

You might also enjoy the chance to upgrade our college "story." As Pete Seeger said in 1994, “The key to the future of the world is finding the optimistic stories and letting them be known.” But choreographer Twyla Tharp wisely points out that "Optimism with some experience behind it is much more energizing than plain old experience with a certain degree of cynicism."

According to Robert F. Kennedy,  human history is shaped by "numberless diverse acts of courage and belief."  Each time one of us  acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he or she "sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance."

ClassACT initiatives reflect the diverse and broad interests of our class:

• Promoting democratic values

• Addressing human and civil rights

• Advancing justice and civic engagement

• Expanding health services around the world

• Increasing STEM skills for underserved youth

• Providing leadership training to mid-career leaders in predominantly Muslim countries

What can you do for ClassACT?

You can participate in an innovative and visionary classmate-created leadership organization dedicated to positive social change and involving HR ’73 classmates. With ClassACT you can:

If you have a vision or a dream for how you would like to change the world but haven’t found a way to bring it to life, ClassACT may be able to help.  We can connect you with classmates who have shared interests and who can help you develop your ideas, design an initiative, and develop classmate participation that will support shared aspirations—even big, bold aspirations! 

If you are involved with a not-for-profit organization that you believe might benefit from ClassACT’s support; if you want help in turning your passion for a cause into action, ClassACT offers strategies to promote your interests and the needs of your organization. We can:

• Work with you to define the help you might need

• Provide guidance on how to develop a project

• Utilize ClassACT resources to promote your organizational needs

• Connect and match you with classmates and their expertise

• Provide support to help you achieve your goals
